Answer the question below after each weeks reading assignment.  You may include photographs and/or illustrations to support your answers.

Week One:  pages 1-56

1.      Describe the setting include the time period, location, and mood.

It is the fourteenth-century medievel England and is a sad mood in the begining because Asta (crispin's mom) is being buried.

2.      What did Asta’s son see and hear in the forest the night his mother dies?

He saw John Aycliff and a stranger in the woods. He also heard them talking about someone being related to someone else.

He saw John Aycliff and a stranger talking about something and they had a parchment that was secret.

3.      Who discovers his presence in the forest and what happens as a result of this discovery?

John Aycliff sees Asta's son so he pulls out his sword, attacks Asta's son, and tries to kill him.

4.      Father Quinel reveals three things in chapter 8.  What are they? What does he promise to reveal later?

Father Quinel tells Asta's son that his name is Crispin.

Father Quinel promised to tell Crispin about his dad.

Father Quinnel promised to tell him about his mother.

5.      What advice does Cedric give Asta’s son about which direction to go?  Do the members of your group feel Cedric is trustworthy?  What reasons does Cedric have for suggesting he go west?

He said to not go south, but to go east.

He said not to go south because something bad would happen.

He said to go east not south because he claimed Father Quinel told him (Cerdic) he had a change of mind.

6.      Describe the faith relationship Asta’s son has with God.

When Crispin is in real trouble (which is most of the time) he falls to the ground and prays for God's help. Crispin also won't tell lies, brake promises, and he won't be disrespectful in the house of God.

Crispin never lets go of God because when his mother and Father Quinnel dies he always prayed for them.

1.      Shortly after fleeing the village Crispin encountered two dead men.  How did this affect him?

All the people will be looking for him.

John Aycliffe is mad at him and people will think he killed them. He wants to turn back but he would get killed, he has to be away for 1 year and 1 day then he will be free.

2.      After giving his sacred oath to Bear, Crispin regrets it, thinking “far better to have died on the road.”   What causes him to think his fate is so bleak?  Why does he believe he must keep is oath?  What does that tell the reader about Crispin’s character?    He just God will send a bad curse upon him.The readers probally can tell Crispin is very religious.ran away from his old master and when he is running away he gets a new master, but Cripin wants to be free so he will rather die on the road then not get freedom. He wants to keep the oath because if he dosn't he believes that.

3.      List three things that Bear does or says that would lead Crispin to believe he is crazy.  Would the members of your group think the same thing, if you were in Crispin’s shoes?  Explain.

That there is no reason you should have a cross, Bear dosen't want to hear Crispin praying out loud, and him saying he dosen't want to see his cross again. Probally yes.

4.      How does Bear describe Lord Furnival?  What is Crispin’s reaction to this description?  What does the author reveal about Crispin’s character through his reaction?

 Bear says "He brags, drinks, and kills in that order." Crispan can't believe it because Crispin thinks Lord Furnival is a noble knight. {Hey do any of you know the answer to the last question?????}

5.      Bear tells Crispin it is best to “live by questions” not by answers.  What do the members of your group think he means?  Which way has Crispin been living up to this point? Explain.                                                                                                                                                          We think it means that never to know something but to look for your self and  find out.

6.      In what ways has Bear challenged Crispin’s ideas about God?  Find two examples of how Bear show Crispin to think differently or to reconsider his opinion about God’s place in his life.

1.      Who do Bear and Crispin see along the road to Great Wexly?  What do you think this means?  Why are they so interested in Crispin?

He sees John Aycliffe with a group of men with gun and bows.

I think it means that they are really trying to find Crispin and get some imformation from him for something important.

2.      What do you think the inscription on the cross of lead says?  Why do you Suppose Bear is reluctant to tell what he read?

Something about his father and Bear just thinks this isn't the time to tell Crispin.

It is a group of men who set the same goals or sometimes take the same path.

1.      Who shouted out to Crispin at the end of the last selection?  Was their reaction what you expected it to be?  Explain.

Widow Daventry. No, I expected Crispin to run to his room when he heard his name.  I think it was Bear who called out Crispin's name.  No, I thought he would run away because Lord Furnival's men were after him.

2.      Bear reveals to John Ball that he ahs learned something of great importance in his travels.  What do the members of your group think he has learned?

Bear is engaged in rebellion of some sort.  I agree with Ben, the mere talk of such things was considered a hanging offense and it seems he is not just a juggler, but some kind of spy.

3.      What signs are being sought by John Ball and his comrades to determine if the country is ready for rebellion?

Lord Furnival is dead and there is much confusion. With no known heirs, Lady Furnival is vulnerable.

4.      What advice does the Widow Daventry offer Crispin?  What does your group think it means?

Widow Daventry told Crispin don't let Bear mingle with those who cause trouble because things could get worse.

5.      Earlier in the story Crispin does not trust Bear, what events prove that Crispin’s feelings have changed for Bear?

As Crispin says his prayers he begs for Bear's protection.

Crispin's father is Ford Furnival so that means Crispin is in high status and he his a heir to the throne.

7.      Why has Bear been taken prisoner?  What does Crispin decide to do?

Bear was taken prison because they were using him as bait to find Crispin. Crispin decides to go back to help save him.

Bear was taken prisoner because he was helping Crispin and something with his secret business that he won't tell Crispin. Crispin decides to go to the palace and save Bear.

 Task Three:

The story of Crispin:  Cross of Lead takes place during the middle ages.  Use the links below to learn what it was really like to live during this time.  Be sure to include information about the feudalism, religion, and other aspects of daily life for people of different social stature.  Remember you may use pictures to help.

During the middle ages the catholic church was the only church in Europe and it had it's own laws.  The leaders of this church are bishops and archbishops who also sat on the kings council and had leading roles in government.  Bishops were usually wealthy and came from noble families and ruled groups of parishes called diocese.

Feudalism was a political system set by the king.  The king can award land or fiefs to his nobles, bishops in return for soldiers for the kings armies.   The peasants or serfs the lowest class of people would work on the kings land in return for protection and a place to live.

Barons also were awarded land in return for their contribution of soldiers for the king's armies. Another name for the serfs were villeins. In exchange for living and working on his land, known as the "demesne," the lord offered his peasants protection.

Women, whether they were nobles or peasants, held a difficult position in society. They were largely confined to household tasks such as cooking, baking bread, sewing, weaving, and spinning. They also hunted for food and fought in battles. Some women were blacksmiths, merchants, and apothecaries. Others were midwives or worked in the fields.

 Task Four:

Each member of your team will visit Big Huge Labs and create a movie poster to promote the book Crispin: Cross of Lead.  Before creating your movie poster you will need to search the web using GoodSearch to find just the right image.  Remember to be creative.  Do not simply use a picture of the book cover.  After designing your movie poster, each team member will insert their poster in the space below.  Then your team needs to examine the movie posters and vote, on this wiki site, to determine which will be left on the wiki as the final project for grading.  Once your team has decided upon a movie poster, remove the unneeded posters.

Tessa we picked yours.
