  •  Some recently published books by the author, Avi, are IRON THUNDER, TRAITORS' GATE, THE BOOK WITHOUT
  •  WORDS, and CRISPIN AT THE END OF THE WORLD.
  • Some of Avi's other hobbies are photography, reading, hiking, running, and playing cricket!

  • When he is visiting school he always asks to speak to the learning-disabled children and says, "They won't talk to me or even look at me. I don't say a thing. I lay out the copy-edited manuscrips, which are covered with red marks. 'Look here', I say, 'see that spelling mistake? There another spelling mistake! Looks like I forgot to put a capital letter there. Opps! letter reversal.' They lift there eyes they are listening and I am among friends!"
  • When he got into high school he failed all of his courses so from then on he needed tutoring in reading and writing.

Task Two:

Answer the question below after each weeks reading assignment.  You may include photographs and/or illustrations to support your answers.

Week One:  pages 1-56

1.      Describe the setting include the time period, location, and mood.

The time period is in the Middle Ages and he is in a village called Stromford, Asta has just died so it's in a sad mood.

2.      What did Asta’s son see and hear in the forest the night his mother dies?

He sees the man John Aycliffe and a stranger in a torchlight and hear them speaking about "urgent matters".

3.      Who discovers his presence in the forest and what happens as a result of this discovery?

John Aycliffe sees him and tries to kill him with his sword and chases him away.

4.      Father Quinel reveals three things in chapter 8.  What are they? What does he promise to reveal later?

He reveals that he has a name other then Asta's son, Crispin, his mother could read and write, and that she wrote what was on the lead cross that he gives to Crispin. He promises to reveal all he knows about his father.

5.      What advice does Cedric give Asta’s son about which direction to go?  Do the members of your group feel Cedric is trustworthy?  What reasons does Cedric have for suggesting he go west?

Cedric tells him to go west. No, we don't because he seems like he pops out of nowhere and he was kind of awkward with Goodwife Peregrine at her house. He says that John says he's going to search north which means he wants Crispen to go south so he can catch him there so Cedric tells him to go west because John won't look that direction.

6.      Describe the faith relationship Asta’s son has with God.

He prays to God and Saint Giles often and attends the daily prayer service with all of the village.

Week Two:  pages 57-118

1.      Shortly after fleeing the village Crispin encountered two dead men.  How did this affect him?

He didn't know where Father Quinnel was, but he found out that he was dead and Crispin kind of thought that that was a warning to him to flee (even though that is what he was told)

2.      After giving his sacred oath to Bear, Crispin regrets it, thinking “far better to have died on the road.”   What causes him to think his fate is so bleak?  Why does he believe he must keep is oath?  What does that tell the reader about Crispin’s character?

It tells the reader that Crispin is is sort of negitive.

3.      List three things that Bear does or says that would lead Crispin to believe he is crazy.  Would the members of your group think the same thing, if you were in Crispin’s shoes?  Explain.

He  seems very angry, harsh, and large which makes him seem like he doesn't sing and juggle for a living.

4.      How does Bear describe Lord Furnival?  What is Crispin’s reaction to this description?  What does the author reveal about Crispin’s character through his reaction?

5.      Bear tells Crispin it is best to “live by questions” not by answers.  What do the members of your group think he means?  Which way has Crispin been living up to this point? Explain.

If you depend on aswers you might not like what you hear. If you depend on questions then you can always get new answers.

6.      In what ways has Bear challenged Crispin’s ideas about God?  Find two examples of how Bear show Crispin to think differently or to reconsider his opinion about God’s place in his life.

When Bear says to get rid of that cross of lead and to keep the one in your heart only.

  Week Three:  pages 118-177

1.      Who do Bear and Crispin see along the road to Great Wexly?  What do you think this means?  Why are they so interested in Crispin?

They see a crowd of soldiers I think they are seaching for Crispin because he is the kin of John Aycliffe and Lady Furnival/Lord Furnival.

2.      What do you think the inscription on the cross of lead says?  Why do you Suppose Bear is reluctant to tell what he read?

I think it says that Crispin is related to Lord Furnival, Lord Furnival, or John Aycliffe.

3.      What is the brotherhood?

 John Ball's Brotherhood

4.      Describe the setting in the town of Great Wexly.

He takes him to the Green Man where he has to do his business with his "brotherhood".

6.      How does Crispin disobey Bear?  Why do you think he does this?  Would you do the same thing?  Explain.

He goes out of the room because he doesn't like it  in the room. I would probably do the same thing becasue it would be very uncomfortable.

 Week Four:  pages 177-231

1.      Who shouted out to Crispin at the end of the last selection?  Was their reaction what you expected it to be?  Explain.

Bear and he was very worried that Crispin was hurt or worse killed.

4.      What advice does the Widow Daventry offer Crispin?  What does your group think it means?

When Bear tells Crispin that when he sees John Aycliffe, run away!

6.      Who is Crispin’s father?  What does this mean?

Lord Furnival, and that would mean that Crispin is heir to the throne.

Bear has been taken prisoner because Aycliffe wants to know where Crispin is and what he is doing in Great Wexly.
